Late Models Gear Up For 100 Lap Main Event This Friday presented by Universal Forest Products

by: Tyler Williams

This Friday May 18th the premier division of racing at Ace Speedway returns to action, and to say the field will be stacked is putting it lightly. The Dick Shirley Chevrolet-Late Models so far have raced three times in 2012 and each time out has seen a different winner. This friday the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models will race for 100 laps, their 2nd race of the Adams Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces Series.

Friday May 18th, Ace Speedway will feature the 3rd annual May Daze Race presented by Universal Forest Products Friday at 8pm. Racing includes the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models, Chick-Fil-A Mini Stocks, Kings Auto Salvage Extremes, Street Stocks, and Southern Ground Pounders.

Ace Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Elon, NC has seen a different Late Model winner each time out. On April 6th’s “Eggstravaganza” it was #27 Jeb Burton taking home the checkers, on April 13th’s “Worlds Collide” event it was #37 Speedy Faucette in Aquafina victory lane, and most recently on May 4th it was #88 Dustin Rumley who took home the checkerd flag.

This Friday’s 100 lap main event is shaping up to be yet another impressive race as the field looks to be one of the strongest of the year to date.

“Every week the Late Models race at Ace Speedway you know your going to see one heck of a race,” said Tyler Williams, Assistant to the General Manager at Ace Speedway. “There’s a reason they’re called ‘The Most Exciting Show On Asphalt’, its an awesome field top top bottom filled with former track champions, a national champion, and a lot of grizzled veterans looking for their first win of 2012 . The best advice I can give our fans is to hold on tight, cause these drivers are ready to put on another awesome show this friday night for 100 laps”.

The Late Model field will be full of contenders going for the win on May 18th, below are a few drivers to keep an eye on.

*”The McLeansville Missle” Dustin Rumley has got his 2012 season off to a red hot start, his last two races he has a win and a 2nd place finish. Currently the driver of the #88 Bryant’s Landscape Supply/Rumley Enterprises/Country Hills Golf Course Chevrolet is tied for the points lead coming into May 18th’s 100 lap event. Rumley, the 2010 Late Model champion and the youngest Late Model champion in track history will be looking for win #2 in 2012 this friday.

*Philip “Speedy” Faucette and his #37 King’s Auto Salvage/Southern Microscope/Beaver Creek Farms late model will be looking to rebound after a disapointing 8th place finish in his last race. A two-time champion of the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Model Division (2003, 2009), Faucette’s first two races of 2012 featured a 2nd place run on April 6th, and a win on April 13th, he has qualified on the Sheetz Pole Award all three late model races this season.

*John Moore finds himself currently 3rd in the points standings after 3 races. Moore’s #4 Moore’s Roofing/Moore’s Transmissions/Turk’s Bar & Grill/Arthur’s Jewelry late model has turned in finishes of 6th, 3rd, and 7th respectively in the three late model races in 2012. Moore, the 2008 Strutmasters.com Limited-Late Model champion is still seeking his first career win in the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models.

*Four-time and defending Late Model champion (1990, 1993, 1996, 2011) and defending ASA National Champion Barry Beggarly comes into this friday’s nights race 4th in the points standings 14 points behind Faucette and Rumley. Beggarly and his #82 Alamance Mufflers/Stallings Collision Center Impala had its best run of 2012 on May 4th with a 3rd place finish. After a 5 win season in 2011, Beggarly is eager to get back in Aquafina victory lane after a 2011 season where he scored 5 victories on his way to his 4th Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Model Championship, he is tied for the most championships in Late Model history at Ace Speedway with Todd Massey (1991, 1994, 2000, 2001).

*2-time Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Model champion Rodney Cook (2006, 2007) is also coming off his best finish of the season after a 2nd place finish on May 4th. The Reidsville, NC native has recored finishes of 3rd, 13th and 2nd in the three late model races in 2012. Cook and his #14 Burlington Honda/William Pickard Trucking late model will be seeking his first win of the season.

*Other driver’s expected to compete include the #31 Sheetz Chevrolet of “Flyin” Ryan Robertson; 2008 Late Model Champion driver of the #71 Trademark Roofing & Gutters/UFP/Quick Cash Pawn Chevrolet of Dean Fogleman; along with the return of R.D. Smith driver of the #23 Myrtle Beach Days/Smith Rentals Ford whom took home a win in a 30 lap Strutmasters.com Limited-Late Model this past friday May 11th.

Friday May 18th’s May Daze Race is presented by Universal Forest Products, and features a 100 lap main event for the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models in the Adams Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces series. Also racing in the Chick-Fil-A Mini Stocks, Kings Auto Salvage Extremes, Street Stocks and Southern Ground Pounders. Pit Gates open at 4:00pm, Grandstands Open at 5:30pm, Practice starts at 5:55pm, Driver’s Meeting at 7:00pm, Racing at 8:00pm.

Jonathan Brown in the hunt for multiple championships in 2012 at Ace Speedway

By: Tyler Williams

In the world of weekly short-track racing, most drivers consider themselves fortunate to be in contention for a championship title, some drivers consider it a bar to grade themselves by if they are a serious contender for a championship or not. For modified driver Jonathan “Jon Boy” Brown, the opportunity to compete for a championship presents itself in not one, but two different ways.

Brown is competing in two different modified series’ in 2012 at Ace Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Elon, NC. Brown is competing in the KPMOTO.com Weekly Modified’s division and also in the Monster Energy Drink: Tour De Madness Series.

Though the cars may look similar to the casual fan, the differences are vast indeed. Brown’s KPMOTO.com Modified provides an estimated 400-450 horsepower while Brown’s Monster Modified is 600 horsepower. Also the race format’s are different as the usual KPMOTO.com Modified race runs 40 laps, whereas in the Monster Energy Drink: Tour De Madness Series each event features Two-50 lap events. Even the number on the side of the car is different as Brown’s KPMOTO.com Modified is a white #10, while his Monster modified is a black #22.

From Brown’s perspective, the differences aren’t that noticable. “They (The 2 Race Cars) both got 4 wheels and they both go around the race track”.

For Brown, the biggest challenge comes in learning how the competition will react to him. “Everyone at the stadium I have an idea of how they’re going to drive me and what drivers I can race and which ones I have to be careful around” said Brown. “At Ace I’m still learning how everyone drives so that’s definately been the biggest challenge”.

Upcoming races for Jonathan Brown at Ace Speedway include a 40 lap race Friday, May 11th in his first Adam’s Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces Series event, then a 30 lap race on June 1st and twin 25′s on June 8th all in the KPMOTO.com Modifieds at Ace Speedway. Brown’s next event in the Monster Energy Drink: Tour De Madness series at Ace is a special Tuesday, July 3rd event where Brown and the rest of the Monster Energy Modifieds will run two-50 lap races, and then again on Labor Day Monday, September 3rd.

-Ace Speedway located in Elon, NC is a 4/10′s mile facility that has features local short-track racing since 1956 every friday night. Under the sanctioning of the American Speed Association, Ace Speedway continues to thrive and strive to present the best in short track racing, weekly racing divisions include Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models, KPMOTO.com Modifieds, Strutmasters.com Limited-Late Models, Chick-Fil-A Mini Stocks & King’s Auto Salvage Extreme’s.

ALTAMAHAW — Two nerve-wracking restarts packed into the final five laps threw what had been a sure victory for Dustin Rumley into peril.

But his confidence never waned, even as all sorts of trouble nipped at his race car.

“The main thing is you can’t lose your cool,” the McLeansville driver said. “I’m sure I almost did. But I kept my cool and we come out on top.”

With Rodney Cook boldly bearing down to create nothing less than a fantastic finish, Rumley proved assertive and resourceful enough to win the 75-lap Late Models feature Friday night at Ace Speedway.

“I said, ‘I don’t care. They ain’t passing me. If I’ve got to dirt-track it all the way around, I will,’ ” he said, sweaty and satisfied, after spiking the checkered flag in the Victory Lane.

Rumley won for the first time in Ace’s premier classification since the summer of 2010.

After reaching a dominating groove at the front — lapping cars and smoothly cruising ahead of the 13-car field — the ending suddenly became a fit of chaos and breathtaking moves.

Reidsville’s Cook, shoving the nose of his No. 14 car to the low side of the track, gained the preferred inside line during goose-bump-inducing moments that highlighted both of the final restarts.

And just when Cook seemed poised to vault into the lead, Rumley charged back the hard way, powering his No. 88 Chevrolet along the high, outside line.

There was one instance when slight contact sent Rumley’s car wiggling dangerously close to the concrete outside wall.

“But when you run this track over and over again, you kind of know the fine line there,” Rumley said. “He got the nose up under me. My car was just a little bit better, though. My car took a few laps to get going and a few laps was all we needed.”

Cook settled for second place, his best result of the young season, despite an issue with his car’s rear brakes.

He certainly left nothing on the table, somehow charging his car through a three-wide situation between turns one and two on a restart to the 50th lap, before slicing toward a potential win with the late burst that challenged Rumley.

“You let it all hang out, man, anything can happen,” Cook said. “I’m just glad I was able to hang on to it.”

Pelham’s Barry Beggarly, the defending champion, placed third. Burlington’s Scotty Warren and Kevin Neal finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Points leader Speedy Faucette posted the quickest qualifying performance for the third time in as many tries this season. He came in eighth after overcoming several pitfalls and battling into the top five late.

Former champion Todd Massey, driving the No. 1 car from Cook’s stable, made a return appearance and led early after an invert of the fastest five qualifiers.

History was on full display during the opening laps with Beggarly and Massey — the only four-time Late Models champs of Ace’s modern era — racing for second position behind Rumley.

– In the 30-lap Modifieds race, Burlington’s Gary Young Jr. quickly seized control and led every lap on the way to picking up his first victory of the season.

The defending champion’s No. 45 car proved strong through four caution periods and double-file restarts and never hinted of fading.

“I didn’t know if I was going to get up here this year,” he said, holding his 6-month-old son Victory Lane. “If I get the car hooked up, I can check out like that.”

Pfafftown’s Randy Butner placed second and Gibsonville’s came in third. Kernersville’s Jonathan Brown, who entered as the points leader, ended up ninth among the 14-car field due to an apparent overheating issue.

– In the 35-lap Limited Late Models race, Liberty’s Boo Boo Dalton delivered his second victory of the season in commanding fashion, leading the final 24 laps with comfort ahead of the 13-car field.

“It was on a rail. I couldn’t ask for a better car,” said the teenager, who earlier in the night supplied the division’s top qualifying effort.

Pleasant Garden’s Patrick Coleman finished second. Haw River’s Jason Payne crossed the line in third.

– Friday night’s other winners at Ace were Thomasville’s Michael Tucker (25-lap Mini Stocks), McLeansville’s Ben Walker (20-lap X-treme Cars) and Garland Ricketts (20-lap Flathead Fords).

Altamahaw, NC- The first 2 months of the racing season are in the books for Ace Speedway and its 2012 campaign and if this is any indication of the action to come the rest of the season, then race fans are in for one awesome season!

March 10th featured the first race of the new Monster Energy Drink: Tour De Madness Series, a 5 races series featuring the 600 horsepower Monster Modifieds, also the Monster Sportsman and Monster Street Stock divisions. In 2 events so far this season currently Burt Myers (Modifieds), Gary Ledbetter (Sportsman) & David Sumner (Street Stock) lead the respective points standings. With events scheduled for July 3rd, September 3rd and October 6th the Monster Energy Drink: Tour De Madness series is sure to feature even more awesome racing action everytime they hit the track.

March 30th and 31st history was made at Ace with the first ever races for the USAC Mopar National Midget Series as a part of “The Real Deal Tribute” a tribute weekend to former Nascar and USAC Driver Shane Hmiel. Drivers from California, Indiana and all over the country came to do battle around the Altamahaw 4/10′s mile bullring Ace Speedway.

In April, Ace has seen other notables as well. Opening night April 6th the feature winner of the Dick Shirley Chevrolet-Late Models was Jeb Burton. Burton, who won 5 races in 2011 made his Nascar Camping World Truck Series debut in 2012 at Martinsville and is currently 25th in the Truck series points standings.

April has also been the month of return, 2 time Dick Shirley Chevrolet-Late Model champion Phillip “Speedy” Faucette (2005, 2009), who hasn’t run a full-time schedule since 2009 has qualified on the Sheetz pole in both Late Model races on April 6th and 13th, is the current points leader with a 2nd place finish on April 6th and a feature win on April 13th leading all 100 laps of the feature event.

In April, Ace Speedway also unveiled a special 3-race series for its 5 weekly divisions where a select series will run a longer race with a larger purse. This series is the Adam’s Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces Series. On April 13th the Dick Shirley Chevrolet Late Models ran their first Adam’s Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces Race with Phillip “Speedy” Faucette picking up the win in the 100 lap event. On April 20th the Strutmasters.com Limited-Late Models ran their first Adam’s Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces Series race with Patrick Coleman picking up the win in the 50 lap event.

With April coming to a close, the racing action is only beginning to heat up at Ace Speedway in 2012. The month of May looks to be just as exciting with Boy Scout night on May 4th featuring racing in all 5 weekly divisions, May 11th’s Mother Day Special featuring an Adam’s Towing & Recovery/AAA Triple Aces 40 lap race for the KPMOTO.com Modifieds. Then May 18th the 3rd annual May Daze Race featuring yet another Triple Aces 100 lap event for the Dick Shirley Chevrolet-Late Models.

Nothing beats an Ace Speedway Friday Night, we’ll see you at the famous 4/10′s mile!

ALTAMAHAW — Victory Lane, almost always the launching pad of celebrations, turned unsettling for Cole Timm on Friday night.

The 13-year-old driver just had won the 50-lap Super Limiteds feature at Ace Speedway.

And instead of being greeted by a chorus of cheers and the flickers of photo flashes, here was a steamed Jody Measemer, a grown man in full, waiting to have an angry word.

Disconcerting?

You bet.

“Yeah, I was worried,” Timm said. “I was kind of scared.”

The source of Measemer’s ire was the moment that ultimately vaulted Timm to victory in this Carolina Competition Series / Pro All-Stars Series event.

Measemer’s No. 98 car had led every lap when a shot in turn two from Timm’s No. 57 car sent him spinning out of the top spot with less than eight laps remaining.

So on a night in which Ace took a break from points racing and all except one of the track’s regular divisions competed, drama still managed to materialize.

After Timm held off runner-up Kyle Beattie on the race’s sixth and final restart to clinch his first series win, Measemer pulled up beside Timm’s parked car, climbed out and proceeded to give the teenager a scolding.

With Measemer towering over Timm and airing his grievances in an animated fashion — he even used Timm’s No. 57 as a visual aid, pointing to the car’s front fender — boos began to rain down from fans on the frontstretch.

Seconds later, Timm explained what happened from his vantage point.

“There was no intentional contact there whatsoever,” he said. “I love racing clean. I would never turn anybody intentionally.

“I was trying my hardest. I wanted to get this win really bad. I just got into the corner too hard and just got into him.”

Timm, the series points leader, started in fifth position and eventually spent eight laps searching for a passing angle on Measemer before the decisive contact occurred.

Tate Fogleman, another youngster, placed third. Measemer, who led the first 42 laps, rebounded to finish fourth. He was followed by Reggie Doub in fifth among the 10-car field.

Beattie charged his No. 84 car during the closing stages and dived toward the rear of Timm’s car with some last-gasp pressure coming through the final set of turns.

“I knew that I didn’t have a faster car than him,” Beattie said. “My only chance was for him to make a mistake. And at the end I figured I’d lay a little wood to him and see if he’d buckle.

“He kept it on the bottom. So once I gave him the bumper and he gathered it back up, that was enough for me.”

– In the 20-lap X-treme Cars race, Billy Scoggins took advantage of the restart cone and a heated, contact-filled duel at the front between Ben Hanks and David Walker to pounce for victory.

Scoggins was in fifth position amid the 12-car pack when he opted for the restart cone and rode the track’s outside line up to third.

Then, moments after Hanks appeared to finally gain the upper hand on Walker for the lead, Scoggins’ No. 0 — a new car racing for the first time — moved ahead with less than three laps remaining.

“Once the two leaders were battling each other, I got to sneak right under them,” Scoggins said. “So it was lucky.”

Hanks finished second and Walker came in third. Their veritable dogfight defined the first 15 laps before Scoggins climbed into position to challenge.

– In the 25-lap Legends race, Dennis Kiser picked up his first victory in the division in nearly three years after holding off Trey Jarrell at the front of the 13-car field.

Kiser, a 20-year-old, led from start to finish. The 15-year-old Jarrell chased throughout the final 10 laps, rapping his No. 14 car on the rear of Kiser’s No. 17 at times.

“I could feel him,” Kiser said.

– In the 15-lap Bandoleros race, Matt Murphy dominated the tiny four-car field and celebrated by popping out of the hatch on the roof of his No. 7 car and taking a victorious bow.

It was an obvious nod to the 11-year-old’s favorite driver.

“I like Kyle Busch and I kind of took his move,” Murphy said, adding that it was the first time he has broken out a bow following a win.
